Ad Analysis Assignment- Week 1
Print Ad- Barney’s Warehouse Sale
This full page advertisement was found in the Metro. The structure of the ad is formal. In discussion of the composition the elements that are most evident are its symmetry and contrast. The words are balanced evenly throughout the space and the contrast in color makes the type eye catching. The varied sizes in words indicates the most important elements of the flyer to the reader. The ad is successful in conveying promotion for a bare bones retail sale.
Print Ad- Colombiana
To contrast with the Barney’s ad, this film poster is not an entire page spread. It is framed within text of film listings. Its position of centre on the page indicates its dominance in the space. The red/orange color used in the background of the poster contrast the white and black of the type that surrounds the ad. In discussion of the advertisement itself it is weighted to the left. This asymmetry forces the eye to the primary figure of a gun. The superimposition of a flower on the gun’s image creates further movement and intrigue in the figure. The contrast in connotation of a beautiful flower and violent gun create a subliminal emotional response in the viewer. The inherent cerebral juxtaposition draws the eye and mind.
Billboard- Calvin Klein
This is a large scale billboard located at Lafayette and E. Houston. The structure of both sides of the billboard can be classified as formal. The two images are slightly weighted, the left photo to the right and the right photo to the left. It creates a subtle connection between them. The slight asymmetry in the images creates a sensuous line. It highlights the feminine curves that the model has. The contrast in tone, created by careful use of shadow also lends itself to the sensuality of the advertisement. The primary aim of the advertiser is to make the viewer believe that by acquiring the Calvin Klein undergarments that Lara Stone wears, they will be able to exude this level of sensuality or at least be that much closer to it. The repetition of an image of the model allows for different aspects of the product to be highlighted.
Billboard- Coors Light
Located on the corner of Lafayette and E. Houston. It is directly across from the highly sexualized Lara Stone Calvin Klein advertisement. Its structure is less formal from the rest of the images in question and more dynamic. There is more movement and rhythm to the image. The structure of the ad can be said to be concrete and on a grade. It is divided into three parts that are placed on grid created by the windows of the building’s facade. Although, the concrete lines of the windows influence the structure, the image itself it is grading. The most pertinent elements when discussing composition are movement, rhythm and repetition. The image’s power lies in the three elements. Although the image itself is weighted to the left of the frame, there is text to the right to create balance. The position and segmentation create distinction from the rest of the rectangular, two dimensional advertisements that adorn every other corner of the intersection.
On-line- Beach Bunny
I was hard pressed to find an advertisement on the internet that did not use flash. Most that are successful use at least two main images. The ads that were more simplistic in nature tended to be generated by Google and were banners found on either the bottom or top of the screen. The Beach Bunny ad is successful in its simplicity. Its structure is formal and its composition is balanced. The power of the image lies in the change of type face and subtle use of color. These elements transform the ad from being a dull plain text banner to an aesthetically pleasing clickable image.
